His father also Alexander, — was a successful linen merchant in the Strand. Both parents were Catholics. Pope's education was affected by the recently enacted Test Acts , which upheld the status of the established Church of England and banned Catholics from teaching, attending a university, voting, and holding public office on penalty of perpetual imprisonment. One of them, John Caryll the future dedicatee of The Rape of the Lock , was twenty years older than the poet and had made many acquaintances in the London literary world. He introduced the young Pope to the aging playwright William Wycherley and to William Walsh, a minor poet, who helped Pope revise his first major work, The Pastorals. He also met the Blount sisters, Teresa and Martha , both of whom would remain lifelong friends. His tuberculosis infection caused other health problems including respiratory difficulties, high fevers, inflamed eyes, and abdominal pain. Pope was already removed from society because he was Catholic; his poor health only alienated him further. Although he never married, he had many female friends to whom he wrote witty letters, including Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Allegedly, his lifelong friend Martha Blount was his lover. This earned Pope instant fame and was followed by An Essay on Criticism , published in May , which was equally well received. Pope's villa at Twickenham , showing the grotto. From a watercolour produced soon after his death. The aim of the club was to satirise ignorance and pedantry in the form of the fictional scholar Martinus Scriblerus.

This possibility may exist because spaceflight has complex effects on the physiology of organisms, such as reduced gravity and different electromagnetic surroundings, which induce changes to almost every system in the body.

The Sun markedly affects most activities on Earth, including its solid, liquid and gas states. Now, humans plan to live on the moon or Mars 3 , 4.

Spaceflight opens new opportunities to learn about capabilities of the human body that could not be studied on Earth. Spaceflight is known to dramatically alter cardiovascular dynamics 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , also posing significant risks, such as an overall greater than fold faster onset and time course of muscle and bone atrophy 12 , 13 , 14 , Microgravity is one of the crucial contributors to these observed physiological changes.

How microgravitational space environments affect aging is not well understood 16 , Honda et al. Inactivation of each of the seven genes that were down-regulated in space was found to extend lifespan on the ground. Aging in Caenorhabditis elegans seemed to be slowed through neuronal and endocrine responses to space environmental cues.

Whether similar anti-aging effects apply to astronauts during long-term missions in space is investigated herein by analyzing heart rate variability HRV on quiet versus magnetically-disturbed days. Exposure to weak geomagnetic fields is associated with biological effects 1 , 19 , 20 , 21 , Previously we showed that magnetic disturbances suppress HRV primarily in the very-low frequency region, which is clinically important since its reduction is a predictor of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease 23 , HRV in the minutes to hours very-low to ultra-low frequency range is also a powerful predictor of longevity in clinically healthy people.

The windows are covered during night hours to give the impression of darkness because the station experiences 16 sunrises and sunsets per day. A typical day for astronauts begins with awakening at , followed by post-sleep activities and a morning inspection of the station. The crew then eats breakfast and takes part in a daily planning conference with Mission Control before starting work at around The first scheduled exercise of the day follows, after which the crew continues work until Following a one-hour lunch break, the afternoon consists of more exercise and work before astronauts carry out their pre-sleep activities beginning at , including dinner and a crew conference.

The scheduled sleep span begins at There was partial shortage of their pre- and post-flight ECG data probably due to poor contact of the electrodes. Their mean stay in space was Informed consent was obtained from all subjects. A detailed explanation of the study protocol was given to the subjects before they gave written, informed consent, according to the Declaration of Helsinki Principles.

The ISS orbits the Earth every 90 min at an altitude of to km. Izumi et al. Historically, magnetic records obtained from the ground have widely been used to study physical processes that occur in the near-Earth environment.

Kamide et al. This type of study over the past two hundred years about the structure and temporal changes of the Sun—Earth space, now called space weather, has now become of interest to space science.

However, it is still extremely difficult to specify the state of geomagnetics in space 2 , 28 , 29 , 30 , Humans are not consciously aware of changes in space weather.

Except for the presence of aurorae, which occur when magnetic disturbances exceed those encountered in the current study, external cues are also lacking.

Analysis of HRV Data collection and measurement procedures were conducted as previously reported 8 , 9 , 10 , Time series of NN intervals were also processed consecutively in min intervals, progressively displaced by 5 min, to estimate TF 0. Focus was placed on the frequency range of 0. Time series of NN intervals covering 5-min intervals were processed consecutively, and spectral power in four frequency regions were computed using the Maximum Entropy Method MEM : LF-band 0.

Circadian differences in HRV response to magnetic disturbance in space Circadian stage-dependent HRV responses to magnetic disturbances in space were assessed by subdividing the hour day into 4 time spans of 5 hours each: morning around , — ; daytime around , — ; evening around , — ; and night around , — Of particular interest were comparisons of ISS01 vs.

    Pre and ISS02 vs.

Comparisons between magnetically quiet and disturbed days used the two-sided paired-t test. The Stat Flex Ver. P-values less than 0. Symbols were assigned to individual astronauts. The frequency-domain HRV endpoints of a 2-day record from one astronaut, split between the quiet and disturbed day, are illustrated in Fig. Values shown in individual graphs indicate spectral power cumulated over 24 hours.

The larger values during disturbed vs. LF-band also shows a similar trend 9. The time has come for a new wave of leadership, in my opinion. It was Mr.

Think about the influence and the impact he had on those impressionable young children who sat and watched him everyday after school. That was a wonderful example of a quiet influencer. An early quiet influencer? D: It does really draw you in. J: Oh yes, absolutely.

Why Quiet Influence Now? Why is it important for us to pay attention to this topic now? In order for us individually to be heard, for people to contribute their value to an organization as well as to have a workplace really benefit from your ideas, new thoughts, provocative thinking, and challenging the status quo. All of those things are so key right now. Introverts really are the right personality type to do that.

I come at this from the old Myers-Briggs — a good standby that a lot of listeners have probably been familiar with— and before that, Carl Jung was the psychologist who developed this whole typology of introversion, extroversion, and several others.

With introversion, we all have that side of ourselves. In fact, as I wrote this book, I really tapped into the introverted side of myself. But also for people who are not, to have a similar experience that I did — to really appreciate that side of ourselves within us.

Click here to find out more about my mini-course. What are the strengths that this particular personality type tends to have that you found in your research? J: I boiled it down based on interviews I did with over 50 introverts. The first thing that introverts do is that they take quiet time, they crave solitude, and it really gives them a chance to be creative and to have more self awareness so that they can then go out into the world and make their difference. The second thing they do is that they carefully prepare things.

The fourth area is focused conversation. You really get to go deeper, rather than on a surface way. D: Oh, absolutely. There was a blog post on the Harvard Business Review the day before about how email can be so unproductive.

It can be much more effective. J: Absolutely. Places like Google allow people to have these pods and gather together in small intimate conversations.

We talked about taking quiet time and preparing and being attentive in focused conversation. Now for the last two strengths. One is writing. Introverts tend to really express their thoughts and quiet influencers do so through these well-developed arguments that they make, and plans on paper, they get focused and clear about things and then they can put that out to people to get them on board and to understand what their concerns are.

The final strength is purposeful use of social media. The introverts that I know who are successful quiet influencers do that.

But from an introverts point of view, it can really help to facilitate and connect in ways that are more in line with how they like to connect with other people.

J: Totally. I have a diagram that you probably saw in the book with six different ripples. Although their strengths can be sequential, you can dive in and have a focused conversation, and then write about it. Ask yourself where you think you might need to ramp it up with your influence — who do you have to get on board?
